A Little Broken, A Little Unhinged (And Showing Up Anyway)
I’m a little broken right now. A little unhinged.
You know that feeling where you’re one minor inconvenience away from a full meltdown? Where you snapped at your kid over nothing and then cried in the car before going into Target? Where you’re rage-cleaning at midnight or laughing too hard at something that wasn’t funny because if you don’t laugh, you’ll completely lose it? That’s where I am. And I’m showing up anyway.
Because here’s what I’ve learned: you don’t have to have it together to be a good mom, a good partner, a good person. Broken doesn’t mean broken down. Unhinged doesn’t mean unfit. Sometimes the most honest version of you is the one that’s barely holding it together. And that version? She still shows up.
What “A Little Broken, A Little Unhinged” Looks Like:
Let me paint the picture.
You snapped at your kid over something small. You cried in the pantry while eating crackers straight from the box. You’re cleaning things that don’t need to be cleaned at midnight because sitting still feels impossible. You laughed at something that wasn’t actually funny because the alternative was sobbing.
You feel like you’re holding everything together with duct tape and sheer willpower. And society says: Get therapy (you probably need it, but you also need to survive TODAY). Self-care (a bath won’t fix systemic burnout). You’re “too much” or “not stable.” But here’s what’s actually true: You’re holding A LOT. Broken and unhinged doesn’t mean broken DOWN. You’re still showing up.
Why This Matters:
You don’t have to be healed to be a good mom. You don’t have to be calm to be capable. You don’t have to be put-together to be present. Some seasons are about SURVIVING, not thriving. A little broken, a little unhinged equals you’re human under pressure. Showing up anyway equals you’re still doing the work. And what you’re modeling for your kids? Resilience isn’t perfection. You can be messy AND worthy. Feelings don’t disqualify you from showing up.
What to Do When You’re Here:
Name it. To yourself or someone safe: “I’m a little broken right now.” “I’m feeling unhinged and I need help.” Naming it takes power from the shame. Lower the bar. Survival mode meals? Fine. Screen time? Fine. Bare minimum? FINE. You’re not failing—you’re triaging. Don’t perform togetherness. Your kids can handle seeing you cry. Your partner needs to know you’re struggling. Pretending costs more energy than honesty.
Ask: What do I need RIGHT NOW? Not “what should I need.” What would help you breathe easier in THIS moment?
Trust you won’t stay here forever. This is a season, not a permanent state. You’ve been broken before and you didn’t stay there. You’ll get through this too.
The Permission:
You’re allowed to be a little broken. A little unhinged. And still be worthy of love, rest, grace, support. You’re allowed to show up imperfectly. Your presence matters more than your composure. This is temporary. Seasons shift. You won’t feel like this forever. And even in the mess, even in the barely holding on, even in the unhinged moments, you’re still worthy.
